Adoptable Mals

Currently in Shelters - The following Mals, Mal-a-nuffs and Huskies are listed as a courtesy to the shelters. The highest risk (those in danger of being euthanized) are listed at the top. Note: These dogs have not been evaluated or temperament tested by Moonsong Malamute Rescue.

RUSTI

Size: Medium
Age: 4 years
Gender: Male
Breed: Husky mix

STATUS: Available
LOCATION: Rusti is at the St. George Animal Shelter in St. George, UT. Please contact the shelter at 435-627-4350 for further information on Rusti.

This is what the shelter says about Rusti: "Rusti is an entertainer, and will enjoy spending lots of time with you! He is a 4 year old husky mix, and enjoys a good walk or especially a good run around the neighborhood! He tends to be vocal in his kennel, but once outside he becomes a quiet explorer, enjoying the great outdoors. He is good on leash and knows some commands (though he has 'selective' hearing at times)."

This is what the shelter says about Husky: "This sweet, majestic giant has tons of charisma and charm. He is calm, a bit cautious and quite the gentleman. He walks very well on a leash and loves to play outdoors. Once in the house, he is calm, quiet and very aware of his size. He is stately, tall and regal and loves to connect with people.  In fact he tends to gently lean on any person he is with.  Husky's last owner passed away suddenly and Husky truly is in need of a life long, loving friend.

Truly a joy to hang out with, he is very much a companion dog.  Husky loves company and bonds with humans very quickly.  "Husky" can be possessive with bones and toys, so he would do best in a home without any children or other dogs."

KAYA

Age: Senior
Gender: Female
Breed: Alaskan Malamute

STATUS: Needs Adoptive Home!
LOCATION: In foster care, Casper, WY. Please contact Freddie - fredell
@moonsongmals.org

Hello there! My name is Kaya, Princess Kaya to my loyal subjects.  I am a 9 year old, very mellow female looking for my fur-ever kingdom.  I am a people loving Mal who would prefer being with humans than other dogs.  I live for walks where I can put my nose to good use reading the daily ‘doggy newspapers’.  Inside, I am quiet and content to lay on my bed around my humans.  I walk great on a leash, know many basic commands, am house trained, don’t get on the furniture (very often) and don’t ‘counter surf’.  I don’t mind sleeping in a crate as long as I know my people are close by.  I love tummy rubs and will ask for one by playing ‘patty-cake’ with you.

Kaya is a wonderfully sweet and mellow Mal.  She does have some separation anxieties when left alone outside or in her crate.  She is also afraid of loud noises like thunder or gun shots.  Because of these reasons, a home with a family member who is there all the time, or one where she can go to work with a family member, would be best for her.  She has interacted with our other foster and they get along great.  She bonded with us easily and is very loving and friendly.  She is cautious when meeting new people but warms up to be her usual friendly self. She is good around older children but may not tolerate the tugging and pulling of the younger ones.  She has the normal strong prey drive and would not be good around smaller animals. Kaya is probably one of the sweetest natured dogs I have ever been around and I know she will make a wonderful companion to the right adopter.

Breed: Alaskan Malamute

STATUS: Available - Special Needs.
LOCATION: In foster care in Heber City, UT. Please contact Holly - holly@

Hi, my name is Mesha, aka Princess Pea, because I am as sweet as can be! I have the most sunny disposition you will ever come across and a face that will melt your heart. I am a very special girl that will need someone to help me with my very special needs. I came into rescue back in July of 2012 and my rear legs were paralyzed from a parasite that attacked my spinal nerves which caused my legs to be very stiff and left me unable to use them. Moonsong and my foster Mom tried for several months with physical therapy to try and help me regain some use in my legs but because I was still growing and developing they were unable to help me. My legs became deformed and caused a lot of pain for me since I still had some feeling left in them. The decision was made with the help of several Vets to amputate both rear legs and alleviate my pain. Thanks to several donors we were able to perform the surgery the end of November 2012. I am so much happier now without my legs that just got in my way and I don’t have that pain any longer. I still have some physical therapy to go through once I am a little better but I am excited to play again.

I am a very mellow sweet girl for a puppy and all that I have been through but I still like to chase cats when I get a chance. I think I may finally be able to catch them since I don’t have those legs any longer! I will probably never be fully potty trained because I have limited control from what happened to me but I try my best to hold it. My foster Mom says if you can stick to a schedule I am pretty good. I love my foster brother and sister right now and would love to have a playmate, probably best if it is a boy. I would really like a home where someone can be around most of the time so I don’t have any accidents and can be properly cared for. If you have the time and lots of patience and love for me then I am your girl and promise to give lots of sweet kisses.

We would like to say a big "Thank You!" to donors who are helping with Mesha's recovery.

Breed: Alaskan Malamute

STATUS: Available.
LOCATION: In foster care in ID. Please contact Niki - niki

My name is Dawson and although I'm kinda shy, I am starting to blossom and trust my foster family a little more every day. They are very patient with me and understand that life was pretty hard for me at the puppy mill I was rescued from. I would like a home with someone who has patience and experience with a shy guy like me. Ideally, I would really like to live in a quiet home in the country where there isn't much traffic and noise. And I really need to live with a playful, friendly dog who is willing to show me the ropes. I have a pretty definite comfort zone so new experiences should come slowly. Even small changes can sometimes upset me but I am getting better because my foster family has learned that it helps to give me LOTS of yummy treats along with low levels of exposure to the things that scare me. They don't rush me and that's why I trust them. I even give my foster mom sweet little kisses now. She almost fell over the first time I did that because she didn't think I would ever be brave enough. I really do want to be with my foster people I'm just not quite sure how to show it. But I do like getting them to play games with me when we are outside in the yard. That is so much fun and is the happiest part of my day. When I first came here, all I wanted to do was cower in my crate, but now, I run and play and have finally learned to wag my tail! I especially like chasing that soft frisbee toy and the tennis ball. I also kind of have a crush on this cute girl dog who lives with me so I think I'm probably the "marrying type" and would most like a fun and friendly female companion. I am a very sweet, calm boy who will do well even if my humans work outside the home cause I'm happy to just kick back in my crate and chill out.

NIKITA - Adopted!

Nikita
Size: Medium
Age: Adult
Gender: Female
Breed: Alaskan Malamute

STATUS: Adopted!
Hi there, my name is Nikita and I am a very energetic and friendly girl from the MT puppy mill seizure. A home where someone will do lots of outdoor activities with me would be my preference. I am very agile and athletic, and a very happy girl, too. I love to run and swim in deep water but heck, I'm excited and happy to get out for any kind of exercise! I am having fun playing with some of the other male dogs here, so I would enjoy the companionship of another friendly playful boy-dog but I would probably do fine as an only dog too. If you have a boy-dog, it would be best if he agrees to let me be the queen-bee and isn't worried about being the alpha. But, no other female dogs, small dogs or cats please! I want there to be no competition with my utter fabulousness! Speaking of fabulous, I can be an escape artist if I don't get enough stimulation or exercise and get bored. I will sleep in my crate without any issues and I am quiet when in my kennel at my foster mom's house. I get play time in the yard there and the other day I found an old squeaky toy that one of the other dogs stashed away. Boy was I in HEAVEN! I have never had toys to play with and I do believe my future home should buy me lots of these things to play with. Because I missed out on some early socialization, it took me awhile to warm up to human attention, but now I'm quite affectionate and like to come get some loving from my foster mom. I walk pretty well on leash, but I can be a puller. (But you wanted to buff out the biceps anyway didn't you?) I am also very food motivated and possessive, so I will need to be fed separately. If you are a fun and active person, then you could be the person for me!

BLAZE

Blaze
Size: Large
Age: Young
Gender: Male
Breed: Alaskan Malamute, German Shepherd Dog mix

STATUS: Available.
LOCATION: Blaze is in foster care in Boise, ID. Please contact Katy - kt@moonsongmals.org - for more information about Blaze.

Hi I’m Blaze! I’m a high energy young boy and just looking for love. People tell me my body looks like a German Shepherd Dog, but my head is a Malamute. I've also been told I have a very beautiful sable colored coat. I know how to “sit” and “come” and I really try to make my foster mom happy. I do need more work on manners and obedience training and right now I have to sit for just about everything! I'm getting "sit" down really well. "Down" and "wait/stay" are a lot harder, but I'm making progress. I do like to pull on leash and tend to weave when I'm walking out front, but I usually tone that down after the initial excitement of the walk wears off. I am super food motivated and am wiling to try anything new for food! I sleep quietly all night and get to sleep in my foster parents bedroom with their other female Mal. I’m potty trained (although I might forget in a new house). I can also hang out in a crate for a few hours, especially if I get a Kong or something like that to help pass the time. I get along with friendly dogs of both gender. I really don’t like it when I’m left alone, and one time I even had to climb an 8 foot chain link fence to get to my people! However, in my new foster home, I am staying inside the backyard that has a 6 ft wooden fence. Of course, my Mal girlfriend is hanging out there with me and we have fun chasing the squirrels and each other! I've been told I have a high prey drive and cats wouldn't be safe with me. My foster mom works from home, so I get to come inside a lot, too. I am young and energetic, so I'd like an active family that will take me on hikes, runs, and maybe even ski-jor in the winter. I've done that this winter, and it's really fun! I would do best with another friendly young dog to keep me company. Humans that work from home and can let me inside a lot would be ideal for me! I need a home to call my own and someone to love me forever. Is it you?

I’d like to introduce you to Thelma and Louise!  Moonsong recently brought these sweet senior ladies into their care.  They were running out of time at a shelter after being brought in as strays.

It’s hard to comprehend how anyone could abandon these two sweet dogs.  I’ve discovered they are rock solid housebroken, sit for their meals (instantly at the same time, it is so cute!), and are very well adjusted.  After having them in my home for a while, I would guess Louise may be a first litter puppy of Thelma’s.  Their mannerisms and actions make us think so, but of course we’ll never know for sure.   As their foster mom, I am falling head over heels in love with them!

Both of these dogs are healing very well from surgeries; every day that passes, the better they feel!  They have hearty appetites and love spending time outside in the dog yard when it’s warm.   If you love the seniors, and would enjoy giving one or BOTH of these easy to care for sweethearts a warm and caring home in their twilight years; I promise you will be greatly rewarded.  I’ve not regretted one minute bringing them home with me.  They are adorable!  Thelma is the mellower of the two, preferring to hang out and enjoy her comforts.  Louise is turning into quite the character!  She is playful and lively, and loves to practice her “play bows”.

At some time in their past, someone cared because they are both spayed.  They have been micro-chipped and are up to date on all shots.  They would so much appreciate a forever home and family.  Will it be yours?

P.S. One other thing I’ve noticed since we’ve taken them into our care; they’ve quit asking for the keys to the convertible!

Look at my smile! How can you resist? I'm a happy, young malamute and they tell me I'm small for a male, but wait till you see the size of my heart! I'm a little shy, so it takes me a minute to warm up to people, but once I do, I'm an affectionate goofball! I really like other dogs, and I'm doing well learning the rules of being a well-mannered house dog. I also enjoy being in my crate. I am a little too interested in cats...so it's probably best that there aren't any in my new home. When I curl up at my foster mom's feet, I imagine my furever home with someone who will take me hiking and maybe even snowshoeing. Doesn't that sound like fun? I'm ready to go camping and jogging and anything that includes ME being with YOU in the great outdoors. If you need a pal to accompany you on lots of adventures, I'm the one for you!

While I tend to be shy with strangers at first, I do have a sweet disposition but need a lot of attention. I am perfectly happy to lean and love on you for hours and love to be brushed (I think I'm quite handsome). Scratch my belly and we will be friends for life.

I was raised with a smaller dog in the household and would do well as an only dog or with a mellow female. Because I missed out on some early socialization, I have a hard time warming up to other animals but have always done well with visiting family pets. It may not be ideal for me to be around smaller pets due to my normal prey drive, which has been amplified by a large number of stray cats in my area.

I would do well in a home with a large yard and room to play "tag" and daily walks. I love to run and be chased, but of course will let you catch me to make you feel better. I have a sweet face with a smile so wide you won't be able to keep yourself from smiling making any bad day you might have had disappear.

I am housebroken and always have had a bedroom of my own to stay in before my move (the mudroom ) and I have never been crate trained. I am in good health and up to date with my vaccinations.

I love to walk, perhaps a little to enthusiastically sometimes, but am doing much better since I have a new "no-pull" harness. I will miss my "mom" and family, but since she is sick and cannot take care of me like she would like, I need to find a home more suitable. If you like a loving and playful dog, then I am your boy!

Hi, my name is Koda! I am a 5 year old, neutered male Malamute looking for a new home. My owner was forced to move to a less than ideal environment, due to a severe illness, causing me to be moved from a large yard and plenty of running and exercise, to being confined in a dog run with my female canine friend. I have as a consequence not been walked or exercised enough making me unhappy.

MAX - Missing!

Max
Size: Large
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Breed: Alaskan Malamute mix

STATUS: Missing!
LOCATION: Was in foster care in Odgen, UT. Courtesy listing: Please contact Michelle: for more information about Max.

Max is an Alaskan Malamute who went missing from his foster home in Ogden, UT on Jan 2, 2014 sometime during the day while everyone was at work. The last location he was seen is roughly 7th and Harrison in Ogden. Max is about 65 lbs and stands about 25 in tall. He is neutered and very friendly. He is light brown, grey and white with brown eyes. He was wearing two collars, one red and black, the other blue with rabies tag and ID tag with phone numbers. If you find him please do not leave him alone in a backyard, as he will probably jump the fence, we believe that is how he escaped. If you have found or seen Max please contact Michelle via either phone, text or e-mail: Parenteau_007@msn.com - 303-917-0229, 719-357-1649. See the map below for the last location Max was seen. Thank you for any assistance!

Courtesy listing: Please contact Michelle: for more information about Max. He is in foster care in Ogden, UT.

Max is a 6-8 year old Malamute or Mal mix. He is about 70 lbs and is an absolute sweetheart of a dog. He gets along with other dogs, kids and adults. He should not be in a home with small animals such as chickens or cats as he feels these are just things for him to chase and eat. Max is capable of jumping fences and was surrendered because his owner felt he was uncontainable. Max is housetrained and appears to do ok when confined inside and allowed to get plenty of supervised exercise. Max knows "sit" and probably knew "down" and "come" at some point in his life but needs a refresher on these commands. Max walks well on a leash but should not be trusted off leash as he finds everything interesting and will just go exploring without you! Max absolutely loves to be around his people and hanging out on the couch next to people. He plays well with dogs, is treat motivated and extremely responsive to the slightest negative verbal command to correct behavior.

Tana, (fka Rio) is one of the MT Mals from the puppy mill seizure in 10/11.

Rescue and Tana's foster mom says: "Tana started out as one of our most fearful dogs but with Wendy’s guidance she has blossomed into a wonderful dog. She has been hiking with Wendy, playing with other dogs, generally beginning to enjoy life for the very first time in her short life. She is still a little afraid of new situations but tries her best to recover quickly. She is a beautiful girl that really deserves and needs a home of her own. With a little training and patience on your part, Tana will be a fabulous companion. She also went backpacking this summer and earned a WPD (Working Pack Dog)! I am so proud of her!"

Courtesy listing: For more information please contact Twila at Second Chance Working Malamutes, twilambaker@gmail.com

Musa is a 5 year old male that we took in from another musher when she needed to re-home her team due to life changes. We have run him on our teams but he prefers shorter distances than we currently run. He would love to join a small recreational team or skijor with his human. He should be an only dog or in a home with a docile female dog because he can have resource guarding issues - mainly with food. He is incredibly sweet natured with people and loves attention and affection. Walks nicely on leash, housebroken and not a chewer/destroyer.

All Second Chance Working Malamutes will only be placed in screened homes where they will be a member of the family as well as a working dog. Adoption application, contract and re-homing fee will apply. All are neutered/spayed and current on vaccines & worming.

Cami is one of ten rescues we took in back in 2010 from a serious musher default in Whitehorse, Yukon Territories. She is shy with strangers, and probably always will be. She is also very sweet and loves her people once she get’s to know them. When we first got her she would run away whenever we would pick up anything that looked like a stick; the poop scoop, a rake, broom, etc. Now she knows that no one is going to hit her she is a much happier dog - it has been very rewarding to see her with a wagging tail! She would like someone with a big heart to help her continue on her path to recovery.

All Second Chance Working Malamutes will only be placed in screened homes where they will be a member of the family as well as a working dog. Adoption application, contract and re-homing fee will apply. All are neutered/spayed and current on vaccines & worming.

Logan is another from the Whitehorse situation. This sweet male loves other dogs and people and is very social. He was very skinny when we got him because he had a digestive issue that would not allow him to absorb nutrients correctly. That is now completely under control with simple (and inexpensive) digestive enzymes. He has gained about 20 lbs. and is now at an optimum weight for his size. Logan runs on team very well and would love to be a part of someone’s recreational team, or other active home. He would make a great skijor dog or biking companion.

All Second Chance Working Malamutes will only be placed in screened homes where they will be a member of the family as well as a working dog. Adoption application, contract and re-homing fee will apply. All are neutered/spayed and current on vaccines & worming.
