RUSTI - Adopted!

Size: Medium
Age: 4 years
Gender: Male
Breed: Husky mix

STATUS: Adopted!

This is what the shelter says about Rusti: "Rusti is an entertainer, and will enjoy spending lots of time with you! He is a 4 year old husky mix, and enjoys a good walk or especially a good run around the neighborhood! He tends to be vocal in his kennel, but once outside he becomes a quiet explorer, enjoying the great outdoors. He is good on leash and knows some commands (though he has 'selective' hearing at times)."

In Foster Care - The following Mals are in foster care with Moonsong. Please contact the email attached to each dog.

KAYA

Kaya
Size: Large
Age: Senior
Gender: Female
Breed: Alaskan Malamute

STATUS: Available.
LOCATION: In foster care, Casper, WY. Please contact Freddie: - for more information on Kaya.

Hello there! My name is Kaya, Princess Kaya to my loyal subjects.  I am a 9 year old, very mellow female looking for my fur-ever kingdom.  I am a people loving Mal who would prefer being with humans than other dogs.  I live for walks where I can put my nose to good use reading the daily ‘doggy newspapers’.  Inside, I am quiet and content to lay on my bed around my humans.  I walk great on a leash, know many basic commands, am house trained, don’t get on the furniture (very often) and don’t ‘counter surf’.  I don’t mind sleeping in a crate as long as I know my people are close by.  I love tummy rubs and will ask for one by playing ‘patty-cake’ with you.

Kaya is a wonderfully sweet and mellow Mal.  She does have some separation anxieties when left alone outside or in her crate.  She is also afraid of loud noises like thunder or gun shots.  Because of these reasons, a home with a family member who is there all the time, or one where she can go to work with a family member, would be best for her.  She has interacted with our other foster and they get along great.  She bonded with us easily and is very loving and friendly.  She is cautious when meeting new people but warms up to be her usual friendly self. She is good around older children but may not tolerate the tugging and pulling of the younger ones.  She has the normal strong prey drive and would not be good around smaller animals. Kaya is probably one of the sweetest natured dogs I have ever been around and I know she will make a wonderful companion to the right adopter.

MESHA

Mesha
Size: Large
Age: Young
Gender: Female
Breed: Alaskan Malamute

STATUS: Available - Special Needs.
LOCATION: In foster care in Heber City, UT. Please contact Holly: - for more information on Mesha.

Hi, my name is Mesha, aka Princess Pea, because I am as sweet as can be! I have the most sunny disposition you will ever come across and a face that will melt your heart. I am a very special girl that will need someone to help me with my very special needs. I came into rescue back in July of 2012 and my rear legs were paralyzed from a parasite that attacked my spinal nerves which caused my legs to be very stiff and left me unable to use them. Moonsong and my foster Mom tried for several months with physical therapy to try and help me regain some use in my legs but because I was still growing and developing they were unable to help me. My legs became deformed and caused a lot of pain for me since I still had some feeling left in them. The decision was made with the help of several Vets to amputate both rear legs and alleviate my pain. Thanks to several donors we were able to perform the surgery the end of November 2012. I am so much happier now without my legs that just got in my way and I don’t have that pain any longer. I still have some physical therapy to go through once I am a little better but I am excited to play again.

I am a very mellow sweet girl for a puppy and all that I have been through but I still like to chase cats when I get a chance. I think I may finally be able to catch them since I don’t have those legs any longer! I will probably never be fully potty trained because I have limited control from what happened to me but I try my best to hold it. My foster Mom says if you can stick to a schedule I am pretty good. I love my foster brother and sister right now and would love to have a playmate, probably best if it is a boy. I would really like a home where someone can be around most of the time so I don’t have any accidents and can be properly cared for. If you have the time and lots of patience and love for me then I am your girl and promise to give lots of sweet kisses.

See more images of Mesha.

We would like to say a big "Thank You!" to donors who are helping with Mesha's recovery.

DAWSON

Dawson
Size: Large
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Breed: Alaskan Malamute

STATUS: Available.
LOCATION: In foster care in ID. Please contact Niki: - for more information about Dawson.

My name is Dawson and although I'm kinda shy, I am starting to blossom and trust my foster family a little more every day. They are very patient with me and understand that life was pretty hard for me at the puppy mill I was rescued from. I would like a home with someone who has patience and experience with a shy guy like me. Ideally, I would really like to live in a quiet home in the country where there isn't much traffic and noise. And I really need to live with a playful, friendly dog who is willing to show me the ropes. I have a pretty definite comfort zone so new experiences should come slowly. Even small changes can sometimes upset me but I am getting better because my foster family has learned that it helps to give me LOTS of yummy treats along with low levels of exposure to the things that scare me. They don't rush me and that's why I trust them. I even give my foster mom sweet little kisses now. She almost fell over the first time I did that because she didn't think I would ever be brave enough. I really do want to be with my foster people I'm just not quite sure how to show it. But I do like getting them to play games with me when we are outside in the yard. That is so much fun and is the happiest part of my day. When I first came here, all I wanted to do was cower in my crate, but now, I run and play and have finally learned to wag my tail! I especially like chasing that soft frisbee toy and the tennis ball. I also kind of have a crush on this cute girl dog who lives with me so I think I'm probably the "marrying type" and would most like a fun and friendly female companion. I am a very sweet, calm boy who will do well even if my humans work outside the home cause I'm happy to just kick back in my crate and chill out.

THELMA

Thelma
Size: Large
Age: Senior
Gender: Female
Breed: Alaskan Malamute mix

STATUS: Available.
LOCATION: In foster care, Cody, WY. Please contact Freddie: - for more information about Thelma.

I’d like to introduce you to a very sweet senior lady, her name is Thelma.  She and her lifelong companion Louise were found wandering the streets, and were in dire straits.    Moonsong brought them to safety with the assistance of some other wonderful and caring folks.   They both required medical attention, and in the past 5 months were showing signs of recovery.  Thelma especially has blossomed with good food and tender care.

We are sad to report we recently lost Louise.  Her situation was irreversible, but dear Thelma has been doing very well.  She is very lonely for her companion, however.  Do you have an open heart for the precious seniors?  Thelma is such a sweet dog.  It is beyond comprehension that someone could abandon her (and Louise).

Thelma is housebroken, playful, and loves to be with people.  She appreciates a warm place to lay her head, and doesn’t ask for much.  Except she becomes very talkative at feeding time!  If you have a tender spot for senior sweethearts like Thelma, please let us know.  She deserves the very best!

SAMSON

Samson
Size: Large
Age: Young
Gender: Male
Breed: Alaskan Malamute mix

STATUS: Available.
LOCATION: In foster care in Cody, WY. Please contact Freddie: - for more information about Samson.

Hi everyone I’m Samson, or you can call me Sammy!  I’m an athletic young fellow, probably about 4 years old.  I was running loose on the air force base in Idaho when a really nice animal control officer caught me and started to teach me not all people are scary-bad.  I’m still struggling with this concept, but my foster parents are continuing to teach me kindness, too.

I’m a bit of a tough nut to crack.  My foster mom was super patient with me, the first month I played hard to get.  After all.. It was she that showed up and suddenly I was taken away from the nice lady that saved me at the air force base, the only security I had known.  But I’ve decided my new foster mom did this because she cared.  After I decided she was an okay gal, I’ve never looked back.  She says I would make an awesome agility prospect.  I don’t know what that means, but I do know how much I like to chase the ball and play with the rope tug.   She also says I am very smart.  I learn very quickly, once I make up my mind it is safe.

The best scenario for me would be a home with another fun female pooch to help show me the routine.  I love playing with one of the female dogs here at my foster home.  She has been teaching me proper doggie etiquette.  As far as my relationship with you, you’ll have to be really patient with me, because I scare pretty easily.  At first I was afraid of my foster mom, but she would hold my bowl each time I ate, and would sit down on the ground with treats, and just be very quiet with me.  Now I am not afraid of her at all, in fact we have a good time when we play in the yard.  I love to take a ride in a vehicle, and I am great on leash.  But this comes only after I trust you.  Patience will need to be your middle name, but just like my foster mom, you will be rewarded for it!

Helloooooo, my name is Lola.  Are you looking for a sweet, even-tempered new friend?  You have hit the jackpot with me!  I was dropped off at an Idaho shelter by a family that didn’t care about keeping me safe in their yard.  But this really nice lady from Moonsong came to see me a couple of days later and swept me away to safety!  I am so glad, because I was so stressed and confused about why my human family abandoned me.  I am very much people oriented, and I want to have a forever friend.  I’m very good on leash, (maybe we could go running together?); and I am a cuddle bug (maybe we could hang out and watch TV together?); and my Moonsong friends say I seem to be tolerant of other dogs too.  But living with cats won’t work for me; I really think it is fun to chase them.  Anyway, would you consider letting me join your family forever?  I’d be so happy if you did!

Moonsong just pulled this sweet dog from a shelter and we are still learning about her, but she seems to be a doll!  Before placement she will be fully vetted.  She is approximately 3 years old and in wonderful condition.

TOBY

Toby
Size: Large
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Breed: Alaskan Malamute

STATUS: Available.
LOCATION: In foster care in Boise, ID.Please contact Katy - kt@moonsongmals.org - for more information about Toby.

Howdy, My name is Toby! I had the more splendiferous name of "Splendor", but my foster mom just didn't think that it fit my goofy personality. I am pretty laid back hanging out in the back yard area and like to chase after the squirrels. I also like to hang out inside where it's cool when it heats up outside. I can sleep all night long in my foster parents bedroom with their other female Mal. That little girl and I get along just fine and like to play, even though she is a pip squeak compared to me (check out my video). I tip the scales at about 85 lbs. and I'm tall. Perfect height for checking out what's up on the counters.

My foster mom is trying to teach me some basic commands, since I haven't had much education. I've learned "sit" and we're working on some others. She knows I'm smart and just a little stubborn, too.

I like other dogs and did well on the shelter's test with big and small dogs. But I do get really excited when I see another dog and just want to go over and say "hi!" I'm pretty strong and do like to pull on leash especially at the start, so my foster mom is using a head halter so she can control all my strength when taking me for walks. My foster dad just uses a no-pull Easy-Walk harness, but you'll definitely get a bicep workout when you take me for a stroll!

I've been told I have the most beautiful howl and gorgeous eyes that can melt your heart. I'm also quite the talker and my parents call me Chewbacca when I talk. I wonder who that is? I like to give kisses and follow the humans around in the house. I'm house trained and am learning not to beg for food when the humans eat. If you'd like a gentle giant to be your best friend, please look me up!

EPIC

Epic
Size: Large
Age: Senior
Gender: Male
Breed: Alaskan Malamute, Husky mix

STATUS: Available.
LOCATION: In foster care in Cody, WY. Please contact Freddie: - for more information about Epic.

Hello everyone, my name is Epic. I had a rough start to life, with an owner who didn't treat me well. My last home rescued me from all that, and I have lived with them for more than 6 wonderful years. They were forced to send me to Moonsong due to circumstances beyond their control, and I miss them very much, especially my little people, 2 of whom were born while I was living with the family. I have mostly been outside, but have not had any accidents in the house while supervised, and now that I am with my foster family, I have been able to move indoors with them and be part of the pack.  I am afraid of fireworks and thunderstorms, so my foster mom made sure I have a really nice crate to snuggle up in when that noisy stuff is going on.  Boy, do I like it.  I completely relax and don’t even pay attention to the rumblings!  I do need some work on commands like down and stay, but am pretty solid on sit and load up. I can be overly helpful in the car, however, and try and help drive or sit on laps, so if you don't want me doing that I guess I need a crate or a seat belt harness when in a vehicle. I like other dogs, and lived with a female Lab at my last home. I miss her too, and would like another friendly female dog for company. I am very spry for an older fellow, and can climb chain link, so you might need to have a smooth panel fence if you want me to stay home!  I should be in an Easy Walk Harness when out and about, because I am very strong and really like to go go go. My best trait, other than my smashing good looks, is that I really love people, all people, of all sizes. I am truly sweet, and like hugs and walks, and did you see how nicely I behave as a lap dog?  I now have a very nice foster home, but I really need a warm loving home of my own once again. Save me a second time? You will never regret it, I really am Epic.

TAIGA - Needs Foster Home!

Taiga

Age: Young
Gender: Male
Breed: Alaskan Malamute

STATUS: Needs Foster Home!
LOCATION: Taiga is in boarding in Pocatello, ID. Please contact Lynn - moonsong@

- for more information about Taiga.

Taiga needs a foster home! He is currently in boarding in Pocatello, ID. Please read about fostering HERE.

Oh my, where to begin? I decided to take a stroll away from home and was picked up by the dog police. My owners never came for me, so here I am, seeking a new family to call my own. My name is Taiga (sounds kind a like Tiger), and I am just sweet sweet sweet. My foster monitor says she could get a cavity just saying my name. I LOVE people, but am a bit too much for younger children due to my energy level. I am just a baby still, barely out of puppyhood. I am 85 lbs. of busy that will need exercise and sturdy toys to keep me occupied. I would be a great running or biking buddy, and have heard of this cool winter sport called skijoring that I am dying to try. I have had some training, including the basics of house training (which will need reinforced), and know most common commands like sit, down, and stay (loosely interpreted by wiggling in place for a split second before coming straight at you to wash your face). I am not trustworthy off leash, since my recall goes AWOL when I see something interesting. In other words, like most babies, I still need firm and gentle direction. But, I am very, very smart, and always up for an adventure or a cuddle (BONUS, I ride exceptionally well in a vehicle). Just be aware that you might see more of my belly than my back, since there is nothing better in the world than tummy rubs. I am fine with non-aggressive dogs of both sexes in a neutral environment, so a home with other dogs to play with would be fun, but I would also do great as an only pet. I just need someone to love me again and let me love them back. Will you be the one to take me home and keep me safe so the dog police don't take me away again?

Age: Young

Breed: Alaskan Malamute mix

STATUS: Available
LOCATION: Riggs is in foster care in New Meadows, ID. Please contact Felicity - felicity@
moonsongmals.org

Hi!  My name is Riggs and I loved my people very much, but unfortunately they couldn’t take me with them when they moved. My new foster home has a 3 year old husky in residence and we like to play together, take walks and dig in the sand box that my foster parents have setup for digging.  I walk on a leash very well and I am learning that I can relax on the walks and take in the sights, smells and sounds around me.  I am also continuing my command training. I can sit and lay down on command now - I knew these things before, but I needed to get more comfortable with my foster parents.  They are teaching me to come when I am called right now.  I love to sleep through the night at the foot of the bed with the husky as a companion. I love to be petted and I do lean heavily on my foster parents when I want some attention, so they think older children in the household would be good for me.  I haven’t learned how to ask to go out yet, but my husky friend is helping me learn. I haven’t had any accidents in the house since I just go out when he does.

Riggs is three years old, a sweetheart and loves to be active.  He is a bit timid at first and will need some time to get comfortable with any new situation.  He will put the weight he needs back on in a short time and is very healthy otherwise. He loves to lay on his back outside in the grass, watch the kids play next door and play with our dog. They really like running top speed around the backyard until they are tired, then it’s a drink of cool water and a rest before they are ready for more activity.  Riggs needs to be exercised daily and he loves to take rides in the car. He doesn’t play with toys but we are working on that, too. Sharing is not something that is familiar to him, but I have no doubt we can teach him to share.

Riggs will be a great companion when he accepts you as his people. He needs consistency and patience to become that companion.

Hi! My name is Thor. I'm cute and lovable and snuggly and happy and 8 months old. My previous family loved me, but couldn't keep up with me. I love being around other dogs, especially if they want to play with me. I've heard about cats, but I've never seen one before. Most everyone who sees me notices how curly and red my coat is. They tell me how handsome I am, but I never let that go to my head. If you want a pal to go on walks or hike or snuggle on the couch or even play fetch, I'm your pup. That's right, I fetch and I know when to sit and stay and come and lay down and sometimes I'll even roll over for you...especially if you have food! I'll always let you know when I need to go out, cause that's what good boys do. If you have a little room for me in your family, I'll show you a lot of room in my heart. Come on, let's go play!

KODA

Koda
Size: Large
Age: Adult
Gender: Male
Breed: Alaskan Malamute

STATUS: Available.
LOCATION: With owner in Salt Lake City, UT. Please contact Katy: - for more information about Koda.
Hi, my name is Koda! I am a 5 year old, neutered male Malamute looking for a new home. My owner was forced to move to a less than ideal environment, due to a severe illness, causing me to be moved from a large yard and plenty of running and exercise, to being confined in a dog run with my female canine friend. I have as a consequence not been walked or exercised enough making me unhappy.

While I tend to be shy with strangers at first, I do have a sweet disposition but need a lot of attention. I am perfectly happy to lean and love on you for hours and love to be brushed (I think I'm quite handsome). Scratch my belly and we will be friends for life.

I was raised with a smaller dog in the household and would do well as an only dog or with a mellow female. Because I missed out on some early socialization, I have a hard time warming up to other animals but have always done well with visiting family pets. It may not be ideal for me to be around smaller pets due to my normal prey drive, which has been amplified by a large number of stray cats in my area.

I would do well in a home with a large yard and room to play "tag" and daily walks. I love to run and be chased, but of course will let you catch me to make you feel better. I have a sweet face with a smile so wide you won't be able to keep yourself from smiling making any bad day you might have had disappear.

I am housebroken and always have had a bedroom of my own to stay in before my move (the mudroom ) and I have never been crate trained. I am in good health and up to date with my vaccinations.

I love to walk, perhaps a little to enthusiastically sometimes, but am doing much better since I have a new "no-pull" harness. I will miss my "mom" and family, but since she is sick and cannot take care of me like she would like, I need to find a home more suitable. If you like a loving and playful dog, then I am your boy!

Musa is a 5 year old male that we took in from another musher when she needed to re-home her team due to life changes. We have run him on our teams but he prefers shorter distances than we currently run. He would love to join a small recreational team or skijor with his human. He should be an only dog or in a home with a docile female dog because he can have resource guarding issues - mainly with food. He is incredibly sweet natured with people and loves attention and affection. Walks nicely on leash, housebroken and not a chewer/destroyer.

All Second Chance Working Malamutes will only be placed in screened homes where they will be a member of the family as well as a working dog. Adoption application, contract and re-homing fee will apply. All are neutered/spayed and current on vaccines & worming.

Cami is one of ten rescues we took in back in 2010 from a serious musher default in Whitehorse, Yukon Territories. She is shy with strangers, and probably always will be. She is also very sweet and loves her people once she get’s to know them. When we first got her she would run away whenever we would pick up anything that looked like a stick; the poop scoop, a rake, broom, etc. Now she knows that no one is going to hit her she is a much happier dog - it has been very rewarding to see her with a wagging tail! She would like someone with a big heart to help her continue on her path to recovery.

All Second Chance Working Malamutes will only be placed in screened homes where they will be a member of the family as well as a working dog. Adoption application, contract and re-homing fee will apply. All are neutered/spayed and current on vaccines & worming.

Logan is another from the Whitehorse situation. This sweet male loves other dogs and people and is very social. He was very skinny when we got him because he had a digestive issue that would not allow him to absorb nutrients correctly. That is now completely under control with simple (and inexpensive) digestive enzymes. He has gained about 20 lbs. and is now at an optimum weight for his size. Logan runs on team very well and would love to be a part of someone’s recreational team, or other active home. He would make a great skijor dog or biking companion.
